My Adventures in Micro-Penning

In a recent blog post, I talked to you about protecting your assets and encouraged you to (somewhat jokingly) join the Fresh Start Asset Protection Program (APP). The post focused on the importance of protecting all of your precious assets and making it a priority to stay on top of skin care, diet and exercise to keep your assets on the PLUS column and not the MINUS.

With that said, I’m excited to rollout the first in a series of Fresh Start APP posts devoted to topics that can put you in the plus column! The first post is an exciting one because it focuses on one of my favorite subjects, skin care. I’m covering a hot new treatment called micro-penning that can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and requires no down time. What woman doesn’t want that?

I’ve entrusted my skin to the same uber-knowledgeable aesthetician for years for regular facials and other treatments. Having recently read about Micro-Penning, I asked Meghann Frazier at SkinSpirit (@frazier.fresh) for her opinion and the next thing you know, I’m lying on her table again getting penned!

So, first off, what is micro-penning? Again, it’s a NO DOWNTIME super safe alternative to common skin resurfacing treatments such as lasers and dermal rollers, that improves the skin’s overall appearance, giving you fresher, younger looking skin. Treatment areas include the face, neck and décolleté. Meghann likes to say that “it makes good skin great” and compares the treatment to aerating a lawn to get food into the soil. I love this! Micro-penning is essentially working on the skin we can’t see, working from the inside out, creating a healing effect that helps to smooth the skin.

During this treatment, the cordless, fractional, automated micro-penning device composed of medical-grade stainless steel is used to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin, helping it produce collagen and elastin. The skin’s repair process results in improved texture and softer wrinkles. Micro-Penning also creates micro-channels which allow topical gels, creams and serums to be absorbed more effectively, enhancing their effects in deeper layers of the skin. I’ve included a little video here which will give you a good sense of what the treatment looks like.

So, what you really want to know is, does it hurt, right? The answer is, it’s a really spicy treatment and you can bleed a tiny bit and experience redness which only lasts an hour or so. But I’ll endure most any pain if it helps me to look younger. I recently had the second in a series of three treatments and so far, I’m pleased with the results. I’ll follow up with my after pics when the series is over. If you’re curious as to what this treatment looks like, click on the video below.

The most important thing to remember is that this treatment enhances your existing skin care regime. If you aren’t practicing good skin care at home, your results with micro-penning won’t be nearly as optimal. When you lay the foundation of a good daily skin care regime, then you can begin investing in enhancements like this one. Think of it like this: you wouldn’t (or shouldn’t!) spend money on a personal trainer if you are making poor eating choices. Good skin is a gift and an asset, and needs to be cared for and nurtured like anything else.
